Materia are those little balls that you put on your armor or weapons to give you magic. There are also balls that let you summon, or add effects. These
little balls are pretty useful. Throughout the game you will collect many different balls, including a few that are hidden.
How to equip materia: Go into the menu screen. After Cloud gives his explanation of materia in the beginning of the game you will be able to access the
“Materia” option. This is where you will equip/remove/etc your materia.
Now, you will see round slots, one row for the equipped weapon and one row for the equipped armor. There will be two kinds of slots:
O – Single slot. Can hold one ball.
O=O – Double slot. One round area will hold one materia. The link means that materia that adds an effect will work with this materia. I’ll explain that
later.
Now, to equip the materia, simply select where you want to put the ball and then select the ball. You now have the materia equipped.
Types of materia:
Green Materia:
This type of materia is the magic materia. Any time you have this type of materia equipped you will be able to use whatever spells the ball has, according
to its level.
Red Materia:
This is summon materia. The number of times you can summon a given monster depends on the level of the materia.
Blue Materia:
Support materia. This type of materia supports your green materia. If you put this in a double slot with green materia, whatever its effect is (added effect,
elemental, etc) will be added to your materia.
Example:
Say you have added effect materia in a double slot with poison materia. You will now have a chance of inflicting poison on your enemies when you hit them.
Yellow Materia:
Action materia. This type of materia adds extra actions to your characters, such as enemy skill, steal, mug, mimic and others. I don’t always find this
materia very useful, but the enemy skill one is pretty cool.
Pink/Purple Materia:
This is the materia that will give you certain skills that you can’t choose to do, like counter attack.
Master Materia:
This materia you can only get once you master all of one type of materia (say green) and then go and see Bugenhagen.

Notes on Materia:
Materia affects your stats. It isn’t much, but just be aware that it can add or detract from your current stats.
No matter how high the level of your materia, if you don’t have it equipped, you can’t use the spells/actions/whatever
