Pets
These are the pets you can tame if you have ranger as your primary or secondary profession. ONLY the pets available in the Prophecies campaign will be
listed here, even though there are other pets in other campaigns/expansions, so if you see a ranger companion that is not listed here, then it is probably
from another campaign. In order to tame a pet, you must have the Charm Animal OR Comfort Animal ranger skill in your skill bar. This is also true if you want your pet to be
in explorable areas with you. If you remove Charm Animal/Comfort Animal from your skill bar, your pet will no longer be at your side in explorable areas. This does NOT
mean that your pet is gone permanently. It will return, just as you left it, when you re-allocate the skill to your skill bar. If you acquire a pet as a
ranger secondary, and then change your secondary profession, you will NOT lose your pet permanently, either. This is true even if you only did the beginner
ranger quest in pre-searing and then chose a different secondary profession. Once you acquire a pet, it is yours forever, unless you speak to a tamer (like
Jamal the Tamer, who is next to Master Ranger Nente in pre-searing) while your pet is in your party, and ask him if he would be interested in your pet.
Please note that, if you do this, your pet will, in fact, be gone forever, and there is no way to get it back after this. You will have to acquire a new
pet if you still want one, and the new pet will not start at the same level as the one you gave to the tamer. Also, if you wish to change pets, giving one
away to the tamer is the only way you can acquire a new one. If your pet is level 20 when you give it to the tamer, the tamer will give you 100g. Pets at
levels under 20 will not net you any gold upon giving it to the trainer. If you did not choose ranger as your secondary profession, you can reacquire your
pet once you do the profession-changing quests in the Crystal Desert, and it will be exactly as you left it. Same level, etc., as pets will only gain EXP,
and thus, levels, if they are in your party. You can change your pet's name from the default name by typing /namepet NAMEOFPETHERE; you also use this
command when changing your pet's name from one you've set in the past, and to reset your pet's name to the default name [Species of Pet], just type
/namepet with nothing after it.
Pets have three modes they can be in. You can access their control panel by clicking on the number next to your pet's name
in the party window (when out in the field). This brings up a little window that has your pet's name, picture, HP, and three buttons (a picture of it is shown to the left of this
paragraph). The sword button with the red starburst background is Attack, the orange shield button is Guard, and the weird white thingy button (I think it's
supposed to be a white dove of peace? ^O__o^;; ) is Heel. To use the
Attack option, you must select a target (like with the Tab key) then click on
this button. If the enemy is within your pet's aggro range, it will immediately run off and attack the target, even if you are not attacking it yourself.
Your pet remains locked on to this target unless you either highlight another enemy and re-click Attack, click on another option in the pet panel, the target
dies, or your pet dies. Once one of these conditions is met, your pet will revert back to his previous setting. The
Guard option prevents your pet
from attacking, even if you or your party are under attack, unless you yourself start attacking physically, or what is attacking you is attacking physically.
If you are only getting hit by spells, your pet will not attack until you start attacking physically. The
Heel option will cause your pet to just
stand there and do nothing, whether you are attacking or not, even if you use a pet attack skill. This is useful when trying to get away from enemies without
your pet staying behind to attack and die, just don't forget to switch back afterwards.
Pets also have the ability to "evolve," but not quite like Pokémon. They do not turn into a completely different animal; they just grow in size and have
different stats. Evolutions are listed below. The different pets acquired in Prophecies are listed under that, along with where you can acquire them.

Pre-searing Black Bears are notoriously difficultto tame. They have a Charm Breaker skill that can cause Charm Animal
to fail. Video with instructions on how to tame a Black Bear in Pre-searing can be found here.
Also, Black Bears have the Brutal Mauling skill, which causes it to attack slower than other tameable pets. |
