Sidenotes: The Beast used to be a very wealthy, but vain and cold-hearted, prince. One day, a powerful enchantress showed up at the castle gate during a rainstorm, disguised as an ugly old beggar-woman. The prince was repulsed by her appearance and denied her shelter from the rain. She then revealed herself to him, and put a curse on him: He transformed into a hideous beast, and would remain that way forever unless he gained someone's love despite his appearance before the last petal fell on an enchanted rose she gave him. His servants were also transformed, but into common household objects, thus condemned to share their master's fate. Still being incredibly shallow, the Beast, resigning himself to his fate, hid himself away from the world, believing that no one could ever love someone as ugly as he. A set of convoluted circumstances leads Belle to end up at his castle, where he feels the first faint glimmer of hope.
